Girls on Tour by Sue

Created by Susan one year ago

I first met Pam when I joined the third year at Congleton Grammar.  We lived about five minutes away from each other and Pam's home was always so welcoming.  She had a lovely back room with a fire that groups of us used to congregate around and a front room where we spent hours listening to records and chatting about everything.  We'd hang around the makeup counter in Woolworths in Congleton on a Saturday or get our dads to drive us to and collect us from endless discos and parties in the Cheshire countryside.

As we grew up and moved away to diferent parts of the country we kept in touch by cards and letters and the occasional meet up if we were both back in the north.  Later when our children grew up a group of us started to go away for weekends.  We called ourselves "Girls on Tour" and always seemed to revert to our shrieking fifiteen year old selves when we were together.  Covid and new technology saw the dawn of our Zoom get togethers.  We laughed and supported each other through good and bad times.  Pam was always so proud of her boys and Andy.

In 1976 Pam and I went away to a holiday camp on the Norfolk Broads with my family.  It was the time of Elton John and Kiki Dee's hit "Don't go breaking my heart".  We used to sing it to each other and whenever I hear it I always remember the lovely time we spent together.  That, and Pam's wonderful laugh.
